A Brief History of Orbis Education
Orbis Education was conceived as a solution to a growing problem. The methods of the past will not solve
the current nursing shortage, and the founders of Orbis recognized that the evolution of online education
would create an opportunity to help hospitals mitigate their shortages.
Founded in 2003, Orbis set out to examine the root causes of the nursing shortage and to develop a company
and business model that would help address the problems. The founders met with thought leaders across the
healthcare spectrum and used the knowledge and understanding from these meetings, along with decades of
experience in healthcare and education, to create Orbis Education.
Orbis formed its first alliance with the University of Oklahoma in 2005, and soon after began the process
of converting the OU curriculum and nursing programs into a solid, adult-focused online educational experience.
In late 2005, Orbis formed a strategic partnership with Sharp HealthCare to bring the University of Oklahoma
College of Nursing Program into Sharp’s facilities in San Diego, California. You can find out more about the
Sharp/OU collaboration at www.ounursing.com
Today, Orbis is set to open two more collaborative nursing education solutions in Nevada and California, and
is also working with numerous other schools and hospitals throughout the country.
