Collaboration in Action
Success in San Diego
Faced with a shortage of nurses and with mounting cost pressures from agency and traveler nurses, Sharp HealthCare
in San Diego, California knew something had to be done. The high quality San Diego nursing schools
were not able to keep up with the demand for new nurses, so when Orbis called Sharp to offer a collaborative solution,
it was an easy decision.
Orbis implemented a solution involving the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing in conjunction
with Sharp. With significant help from both OU and Sharp, Orbis spearheaded the set-up of the site, approval of the programs,
and delivery of the courses. OU now offers an online “accelerated BSN” program within the Sharp system, providing students
with a bachelor’s degree the unique opportunity to earn a second degree to become a BSN in only 14 months.
The curriculum is comprehensive, encompassing more than 600 hours of online course work and almost 900 hours of hands-on
clinical preparation. Theory courses are taught by university nursing faculty via interactive online classes that include
threaded discussions, real-time webcasts, projects, assignments and proctored examinations. Students have the flexibility
of completing the online courses during day or evening hours. Hands-on clinical preparation is taught by appointed adjunct
faculty assigned to work directly with students at your facility.
